Actually, the idea came from the fur-paintings, where the "drawing" is not actually drawn but the outline of the fur. Translated in oil paint that would mean that the "drawing" is simply the white of the canvas. It's there and it's not.
If you think about it, the lines you see are not drawn, they're simply empty space between two surfaces, between the silhouettes of forms. So what you (think) you see, is what you get, even when it isn't there.
