1989

During my time in the army, while trying to sleep as much as I could, I also wrote a lot. There wasn't much else to do. Later I made a bunch of cartoons of my officers witch oddly enough made me very popular. Privileges are everything in the army and hard to come by for a grunt. After I did my year of service I moved from Ghent to Brussels.

The writing and cartoons I did in the army let me to the sideline of the graphic novel. In the years that followed I created dozens of them. I still do some times.

I suppose living in Brussels had its advantages, I just couldn't figure out what they were.

Then Joost Declercq gave me my first gallery show, together with Juan Muñoz, albeit that Muñoz was in the main part of the gallery downstairs and I had my solo show on the second floor.
But still, it was quite an experience.

The central painting in that show was "Cornered" (enamel on canvas, 160 x 200 cm).
